de fantastische vliegwedstrijd

The Griffeljury of 2021 awarded 'De fantastische vliegwedstrijd' by Tjibbe Veldkamp a Vlag en Wimpel.

This fantastic, large picture book brims with comical details, inviting the reader to uncover the true story of the race...

Welcome to the Flying Race for Birds! Ten teams line up at the start. During the race, the competitors run into trouble one by one. Team Flamingo never leaves the ground, Team Hawk bails out with the ejection seats, and Team Ostrich-Penguin crashes!

Wait a second, what is going on here, and why is Team Chicken the only one staying out of trouble?

From the jury report:
The masterful illustrations by Sebastiaan Van Doninck hold the answer. In this picture book, author and illustrator team up to tell the complete story of a race you will naturally want to watch on replay.
Veldkamp wittily takes care of that too: ‘If you would like to watch this race again, the
replay starts right now at the front of this book.’
