award-winning kids' books 2023

Picking just one of these 2023 award-winning kids' books is quite a challenge, with so many Silver Slate Pencil and Silver Brush gems from this year's Children's Book Week.

Every single one shines, whether it is a Silver Slate Pencil winner with a wonderful story or a Silver Brush winner with gorgeous illustrations. Some titles tie right into the Children's Book Week theme 'At My House', like 'Kinderen van het drijfzand' for when your ancestors' roots lie in Nigeria. Older children can dive into 'Patroon', an exciting and gripping read about a family secret. Other books explore a completely different theme, such as 'De zoon van de berentemmer', a tale about survival and, above all, discovering your talent. And for the little ones, there is the sweet story 'Heksje Hazel' about nature and friendship.

The Silver Brush winners make choosing just as tricky. Discover the stunning illustrations in 'Zij hadden hun schaapjes geteld', which tells the story of Bethlehem as if it were happening today. Which book will take home the Golden Slate Pencil and the Golden Brush? You will also find wonderful informative books, like 'Briljante Planten', which reads like a novel, and the surprising 'Een kleine geschiedenis van de mens door dierenogen', a true feast of stories and illustrations to dive right into.
