schildpad en ik

In Marit Törnqvist's gorgeous picture book 'Schildpad en ik', winner of a 2023 Zilveren Griffel award, a little boy befriends a tortoise that his grandpa brought back for him from a faraway land. He is thrilled, because now he has a friend who is always there for him!

Meanwhile, Tortoise keeps growing and growing. And it turns out he can live to be a hundred years old. Over the years that follow, Tortoise slowly becomes a burden. There is only one solution: Tortoise has to go. Still, the two of them might not be able to live without each other.

From the 2023 Griffels en Penselen Jury Report: "Marit Törnqvist knows how to subtly, and therefore sublimely, weave a broad palette of ‘grown-up’ themes into this story: bullying, migration, saying goodbye, the importance of heritage and culture, and passing stories on to the next generation. In doing so, the author takes her young audience seriously with a text that explains very little. The clear, short sentences - told in the pleasant narrative voice of grandpa as a boy - hit the mark and are framed by atmospheric illustrations. Text and image strengthen each other and move the reader." Discover this moving, award-winning story together.
